Phantom/Ghost - Perfect Lovers (Tobias Thomas & Superpitcher Unperfect Love Mix)

Besides the fact that we’re not there."Dirk Von Lowtzow’s dramatic vocal proclamation in the middle of “Perfect Lovers” by Phantom/Ghost is probably one of the most stirring and melodramatic moments in the short, ever-broadening history of microhouse. Most people are familiar with the “Unperfect Love Mix” of the song which was done by Tobias Thomas & Superpitcher and placed as the emotional centerpiece of Michael Mayer’s landmark Immer mix. While the original version is surprisingly brisk acid house interjected by murky and foreboding synths, the “Unperfect Love Mix” ambitiously shifts the song into a classical/house hybrid and arguably turns out with the more definitive version. The first two minutes are sampled right from the most famous part of Mahler’s 5th symphony, the sentimental Adagietto. Instead of a paean to Mahler’s new fiancée, it sounds downright chilling and gothic, with the strings alternating from melancholy to downright ominous. Add to this some narcotic beats and Lowtzow’s deep, haunting voice and it adds up to one of the more mysterious house classics of the past few years.Michael F. Gill @ Stylus Magazine, 2008

Afro Medusa - Pasilda (Knee Deep Club Mix)
"Pasilda", released in 2000, has always been one of my favorites. It sounds amazing to hear out, in a big room, and it's one of those songs, like "Notice Me" by Sandee, that a good DJ can manipulate so that you won't notice that it's been building slowly, until the bass drops, and then you realize that you've been soaking in it for the past five minutes. The lyrics are sweet. At around four o'clock in the morning, taking a break after the first major set at the Sound Factory, the old Sound Factory on West 27th Street, Frankie Knuckles used to play "You X Me" after a slow song like "Free" by Deniece Williams, before ramping things up again into the second set that would take us into mid-morning. Another favorite from Mars in NYC. I didn't know, until recently, that "Rock To The Beat" was co-written and produced by Kevin "Inner City" Saunderson. My favorite Saunderson remix is New Order's "Round And Round", such a guilty pleasure.101 - Rock To The Beat [zsh]
Lil Louis - French Kiss
I was listening to this on the train this afternoon and couldn't believe how good it sounds, twenty years after it's release on FFRR. The first time I heard "French Kiss" was at Mars, in the basement, on New York's West Side Highway. I could generally expect to hear the 49ers' "Touch Me" right after "French Kiss". French Kiss [zsh]

I was listening to the Pocketknife mix session on Beats In Space this morning and although I'd never heard of Brooklyn-based dj/producer Pocketknife before, I loved his remix of psychedelic folk-rock and difficult listen Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice's "I Am the One and He Is the Caretaker of My Heart" so much, they way the song is transformed from reedy backwoods hymn into hand-clapping, boot stomping dance music, that I had to have it, travel size, so I that could listen to it over and over on my iPod. So I edited out the talky bits and shaved the hour plus mix down to seven minutes, and it includes the Victor Gama song "O Dialogo Dos Pernetas" that preceded it.
